Coming from 7 acres purchased in 2006, located in the southern part of the appellation (more Cote Blonde than Cote Brune), the 2012 Cote Rotie Domaine des Pierrelles is 100% Syrah that will spend 12 months in 20% new French oak. It is an elegant, gorgeously pure barrel sample that offers up classic black raspberry, crushed flowers, hints of olive and loads of spice, as well as a medium to full-bodied, seamless texture on the palate that carries ultra-fine tannin. Impressive all around, with perfect integration and balance, it should be reasonably approachable on release (as will most 2012s), yet evolve gracefully for 15-20 years.
Rather sleek, with the raspberry and blackberry fruit tightly layered with sweet licorice and singed vanilla bean notes. A flicker of green olive hints at the terroir, but this stays reliant on polished fruit through the finish. Drink now through 2022.
