BOW (88)

This inaugural Heavily Peated release from Kilkerran storms the gates with unapologetic intensity. The peat—clean, robust, and unapologetically bold—brings with it waves of smoke mingled with a bright zest of lemon. Yes, the high ABV poses a challenge to drinkability, but it’s one worth rising to. The flavor profile is dark and brooding, evoking rich chocolate, charred woodsmoke, and the bitterness of cooled coffee. A touch of water transforms the experience entirely, unveiling a briny edge that nudges this Kilkerran towards Islay territory. There’s a haunting familiarity here, reminiscent of Laphroaig’s glory days. A confident, swaggering dram.

Nose
An exquisite harmony of peat and sherry greets you, defying expectations for something labeled "Heavily Peated." It’s magic in a glass, as though Merlin himself orchestrated this union. Smoky tendrils waltz with the sweetness of sherry in a duet that would make Fred and Ginger proud. Remarkably, despite the formidable ABV, it’s a pleasure to delve deep into the aroma without fear of being overwhelmed.

Taste
What the nose promises, the palate delivers—Hallelujah! No water is necessary here, though a touch won’t hurt if you’re so inclined. Youth is evident, perhaps, but irrelevant. I’ve had far older whiskies that squandered their potential at double or triple the cost. This Kilkerran embraces a creamy texture, rounding out its smoky, sherry-rich heart with just enough spice to keep things lively.

Finish
The finish lingers like an intimate conversation between the peat and sherry, a flirtatious exchange that refuses to fade quietly. A hint of dryness at the very end adds a final flourish, leaving you eager for the next sip.

This is whisky that knows exactly what it is and revels in it—a confident debut for the Heavily Peated line. Good stuff indeed.
