Picked five weeks later than the Mambourg, and selected rigorously due too the difficult weather conditions, the 2013 Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim opens with a very clear, fresh and elegant bouquet with tropical fruit, white-peach and fruit tea aromas. Fresh, almost piquant, beautifully precise, finessed and elegant on the palate, this has an almost lean and straight character. It has a ripe and deliciously sweet but very well defined fruit that finishes with salt, grip and tension, namely a very delicate bitterness and tannic grip. There is a certain astringency in the finish of the 2013. The Altenberg is from calcareous clay soil and planted with almost everything including Riesling, Gewurz and Pinot Gris.
