The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets 1er Cru has dispensed with the austerity it demonstrated out of barrel, but it retains focus and linearity. It's not a flamboyant bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with a beautiful entry, a keen line of acidity and just a touch of stem ginger (again). The 2022 shows impressive persistence on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at the Stannary Wines dinner in London with Thierry Pillot.
Ripe and vaguely exotic aromas are comprised by notes of Granny Smith apple, citrus confit, passion fruit, prominent mineral reduction and just enough wood to merit pointing out. Once again there is excellent volume to the rich and seductively textured middle weight flavors that aren't quite as stony but do offer a fine combination of depth and persistence. This is also worth considering.
“Always lots of structure and shoulder but you have to keep the freshness and it doesn’t always happen” opines Thierry. Very intense indeed through the middle, ripe lemons, liquorice, a little flesh on the bones, but so much fruit that you barely see the stones now, in its youth. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted Nov 2023.
