The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey comes from 0.49-hectare plot of 60-year old vines. It has a very refined bouquet that just needs a little more terroir expression: introspective at the moment, yet complex and nicely delineated. The palate stops you in your tracks with its cashmere texture. It is struck through with a fine bead of acidity, the fruit so pure that it is almost like caviar and consequently, I feel that it just dispenses with some of its individuality, as gorgeous as it is.
100% new oak. Vines 60+ years old ? same as Sylvain. Fairly cool spot. Deep flavoured with some (unusual for 2012) autumnal notes. Vigorous start with a whack of ripe fruit and the oak only just poking through. Still embryonic and pretty muscular. Lots of freshness on the finish.
