One of the most backward and reserved wines in the cellar, as well as one of the most promising, is the 2018 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot), a serious cuvée that unfurls in the glass with aromas of wild berries, dark chocolate, grilled squab, orange rind and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a muscular chassis of rich, powdery tannins, considerable concentration and a long, resonant finish.
There’s a wild and exotic edge to the nose with red and violet flowers, blood oranges, pomegranate and an array of fine, bright red fruit, as well as a dusting of hard, brown spices and wild-forest notes. The palate is succulent, very juicy and intense and has an athletic tannin structure with powerful, long tannins that hold the finish well. Very old vines, planted in the 1920s.
Glorious imperial purple colour, with a majestic nose alongside but not over opulent. The fruit smells as if it has been picked at perfect ripeness. There is considerable weighty on the second half of the palate, a bit of orange zest in the red fruit mix, tannins just present – certainly present, but more or less covered by the fruit. Very persistent. Fine wine. 14% or even a touch more but balanced.
A lift of pure, dark cherry rises momentarily from the glass on this shy, closed wine. A touch of smoke accompanies fruit on the serene palate, which has a concentrated heart of black cherry, smoke and tar. All is dense and powerful, brooding away with exquisite drive. This wine needs to sleep in the bottle before it can break through with its racy, sleek power. Drink 2030–2050. Anne Krebiehl MW
