Based on 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir and disgorged in September 2016, the 2002 Millésime Brut Légende (a.k.a. Hugh de Payen) has a deep, rich and intense bouquet with buttery, floral and smoky flavors. Still Chardonnay-dominated (ripe Chardonnay). Pure, complex and very mineral on the palate, this is a highly finessed but complex and mineral cuvée with a long, pure and iodine-inflected finish. It is a great wine with a wonderful combination of mineral complexity and fruity finesse. Very long and powerful. Tasted April 2018.
