Looking at the 2012s from barrel, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Classique is a rough blend of 85% Grenache and 5% each of Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault. Aged all in concrete, it is a medium-bodied, rounded and nicely textured effort that has solid kirsch and cherry fruit, underbrush and light spice-driven aromas, fine tannin and a clean, elegant style. It should gain weight once bottled and have over a decade of longevity.
This is well-built, with a strong ganache frame and a racy graphite spine that drives through the core of plum sauce, melted fig and blackberry preserve flavors. Picks up extra notes of Turkish coffee and roasted juniper on the finish.
