Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyeres Grand Cru 2011 from Domaine de la Vougeraie has an exquisite bouquet that leaps from the glass with ebullient red cherries, fresh strawberry and pomegranate scents that are nicely detailed, the oak assiduously interwoven. The palate is very sweet and candied on the entry, possibly a little over-ripe. There is a lot of red fruit here, almost sorbet-like in quality, with sufficient freshness and acidity to maintain balance. This is the most typical Charmes-Chambertin in the line-up with a long, persistent, orange zest and spicy finish that is quite bullish.
