Robert Parker (93)

The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Roncières could be one of Etienne Grivot's finest offerings. It has a more red fruit spectrum than the Pruliers with red cherries, mint and then later, earthy aromas developing. There is good transparency here. The palate is very tense and ripe, the acidity more “cutting” than the Pruliers with more mineralité on the vivacious finish. Excellent.

Poor Mathilde Grivot. Opening the door of their office, Jean’s hop-along daughter and assistant winemaker was on crutches. I enquired what happened. Turns out that she had stumbled over a tube from one of the vats and twisted her ankle, one of those accidents where you rue how something so banal renders you incapacitated. Fortunately, their winery has a lift in which she can enter the barrel cellar, although on this occasion I set myself up in the vat-room and Jean ran back and forth with samples assembled in proportions of new and used oak representative of the final blend.

Mid crimson. Lots of spice and dark fruit. Dark-fruited and savoury on the palate but there's a juiciness that escapes around the edges, lifting it to a spicy and energetic intensity. Terrific length.?
