From a tiny, family-run winery, the 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Saporoia sees fruit sourced from the red soils of vineyards between Sant-Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell-Abate. The wine spends three years in traditional cask and shows slightly green characteristics of crushed peppercorn, garden herb and eucalyptus oil. Proprietor Giovanni Pennoni and his family have produced one of the vintage's most unique and most menthol-like expressions considering the strong summer heat. The effort is compelling and intriguing especially given the smooth manner in which the wine spreads over the palate.
