The 2022 Hohenmorgen G.C. is from a warm, fully south-facing site in Deidesheim, just behind the von Winning estate. The wine combines red sandstone, saline and aromatic Riesling aromas with spicy, flinty and peppery notes of crushed stones and well-matured fruits. Lush but precise and savory on the palate, this is a tight, intense, firmly structured and still slightly astringent Riesling with remarkable elegance and purity but also power and length. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2023.
Staggering concentration on the mouth-filling, but finely-nuanced palate. The fruit tastes as if the orange has somehow crawled inside the apricot or vice versa. Super-silky mouthfeel, the fully ripe fruit beautifully underlined by the flinty minerality, the two elements so beautifully intertwined it takes your breath away. From biodynamically grown grapes. Wild-fermented in large neutral oak. Vegan. Drink or hold.
